Magistrate scolds women for fighting

- – C. T.

WESTERN BUREAU: TWO ST James women who got into a fight during which one hit the other with a bottle were warned to keep the peace when they appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Sasha- Gaye Sandcroft, of a Montego Bay address, had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm committed against Sashana Grant. The case was subsequently dismissed after the two women were interviewed by a probation officer and were able to settle their disagreement.

In explaining her actions, Sandcroft told Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie that on Saturday, January 25, she hit Grant with a bottle after the two got into a fight at the nightclub where both women were employed.

‘ATTITUDE’

“I was at the nightclub on Saturday night, and she (Grant) was in a room, and I told her only staff could be there, so she gave me ‘ attitude’,” said Sandcroft. “She ‘ chukked’ me, so I ‘chukked’ her back, and I saw she had scissors, and the only thing I had to defend myself was the Stone’s Ginger Wine bottle,” the defendant added.

The case was briefly put on hold while Sandcroft and Grant were sent to speak to the probation officer. Grant later reported that she and the defendant had come to an agreement.

“You got your compensation?” Tie asked Grant. “Yes, your honour,” said Grant. “As women, there must be a better way that you can sort out your problems. Make sure you do not come back before this court for anything,” Tie said sternly before dismissing the case and allowing the women to leave the courtroom.
