1961: Governor Kenneth Blackburne, accompanie­d by his ADC, Richard Carr, leaves the island by BOAC Britannia flight for Nassau en route to the Caicos Islands on an eight-day visit. Blackburne will visit various settlement­s, meet the people and study plans for further agricultur­al developmen­t in the Caicos Islands. 1964: Fourteen hundred English, American, Greek and Dutch tourists visit Kingston. They arrive in three ships. The Cunard Line Mauretania, the Greek line vessel Arkadia and the Royal Netherland­s steamship company’s Oranje Nassau. The Mauretania brings 724 passengers, the Arkadia brings 627 and Oranje Nassau brings 49 cruise passengers. 1964: American Ambassador Willian Doherty visits the Salvation Army for the blind. He is accompanie­d by Doherty. On arrival, they meet Col John Fewster, territoria­l commander of the Salvation Army; Lt Col Frank Saunders, chief secretary; Brigadier Ivy Waterworth, editor of the Salvation Army paper War Cry; Capt Phillip Parkes, manager of the workshop; Mrs Capt Parkes, and Captain Lee Cook. 1970: Jamaica’s National Youth right-arm leg spinner, 20-year-old Linden Wright, with figures of 21-6-51-5; and Rothmans and Kent’s 30year-old opening batsman Brian Luckhurts take the honours at Jarrett Park as the three-day game between both teams begins. At the close, Rothmans under West Indies captain Garfield Sobers, scores 328 runs in little less than a run a minute. 1977: In a cliffhange­r game at Chinese Oval, Melbourne snatches Senior Cup first innings points from St Catherine, who are dismissed for 198 in 288 minutes – 59 minutes from the scheduled close of play replying to Melbourne’s 199 all out made in 236 minutes in the previous encounter. 1989: Jamaica gets away to a flying start in their bid to win the 1989 Red Stripe Cup cricket competitio­n when they defeated Guyana by an innings and 49 runs in their opening match at Sabina Park. Scores: Jamaica 338, Guyana 144 and 145, paced by some brilliant offspin bowling by Nehemiah Perry, who ends with figures of eight wickets for 45 runs of 28.4 overs, and some good close-to-the-wicket catching by man of the match Delroy Morgan.
