LMU and Queens University win at Jamaica Classic

LOYOLA Marymount University (LMU) ‘Lions’ and Queens University won their respective divisions of the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic Men’s NCAA Division One tournament that ended at the Montego Bay Convention Centre yesterday.

LMU scored an upset 77-75 overtime win over Wake Forest to win the Montego Bay Division while Queens University beat Morgan State 74-64 to win the Rose Hall Division.

The four teams that met in the championsh­ips had won their first games on Friday’s first day of the event.

In the Montego Bay Division playoff, despite leading by 10 points for a 35-25 scoreline after the first half, Loyola allowed Wake Forest back in the game in the second half and the Atlantic Coast Conference team made the best of it, tying up the scores at 65-all and forcing an extra five minutes of overtime.

Loyola Marymount, however, who had come from behind to beat Georgetown University on Friday, held on to win by two points thanks to a game-high 23 points from Chance Stephens, 20 from Cam Shelton, and 11 from Justin Ahrens.

Trey Appleby Matthew Marsh scored 19 points to lead Wake Forest who were losing their first game of the season, Matthew Marsh scored 14 points, and Andrew Carr scored 10 points and had eight rebounds.

Queens University, who play in the Atlantic Sun Conference, got off to a fast start and led Morgan State by 20 points 22-2 with just under 12 minutes to go in the first half.

Morgan State rallied in the second half to cut the deficit to single digits, 44-53, with eight and a half minutes to go in the game — but that was as close as they got.

Jay’den Turner scored 23 points to lead Queens, Kenny Dye scored 18 points, AJ Mckee scored 10 points, while BJ Mclaurin scored nine points and had 10 rebounds.

Malik Miller scored 16 points for Morgan State while Isiah Burke scored 15.

In the first game of the day Georgetown rebounded from Friday’s loss to beat Lasalle University by seven points 69-62, after leading by 20 points 41-21 at the half-time break.

Qudus Wahab led Georgetown University with 23 points and Brandon Murray scored 16 points.

Jhamir Brickus scored 14 points for Lasalle while Khalil Brantley and Anwar Gill both scored 13 points.
