‘We have got to do better,’ admits Dunbeholden assistant coach

AFter two matches played in the Jamaica Premier League and two losses by an aggregate score of 4-0, Dunbeholden FC are already in deep trouble.

With the regular season consisting of just one round for the 2020-2021 season and the number of games reduced to 10 from 11 with the withdrawal of the UWI FC, there is very little room for error for any team harbouring hopes of making it to the play-off round.

So, dropping six points from the first two games is the worst start imaginable for a team that fancied their chances of going all the way this season.

Back-to-back 2-0 losses to champions Portmore United FC and Waterhouse FC mean that nothing short of a win in their next fixture will see them almost eliminated from the play-offs before the season even gets to halfway.

Assistant Coach Ricardo Smith says that tweaks will be needed ahead of their next game based on what transpired on the weekend.

“It takes time. We are not going to say we are not in that mode, because all the teams are playing on the same pitch, same amount of time, so we have to tweak things and come better next time.”

Just as it was in the first game of the season, the opening goal conceded by Dunbeholden came via a deflection that left goalkeeper Damion Hyatt with no chance. Smith described that situation as unfortunate and insisted that it led to the concession of the second.

“As we could see, Waterhouse first goal, there is nothing we could have done about it. It could have happened to them, it could happen to anybody. The second goal we saw where we went to try to get the equaliser and they caught us on the counter, so it was just unfortunate.

“The first goal really led to the second one because we had to try and get back the equaliser, so we got caught on the break.”

Smith admitted that it was a massive setback to lose a second game on the trot and insists that his players must do better.

“This set us way back. The league is very competitive and has very good teams. It’s one round and if we want to be in the top six when the knockout time comes, we have got to do better,” he said.
