Wexford pub to provide a little taste of the homeland for Model County descendants in Savannah, USA

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

A VISIBLE indication of the ever-strengthening links between Wexford and Savannah, Georgia, a brand new pub is to open in the US in the coming weeks bearing the name of the Model County.

‘Wexford – Savannah’s Irish Pub’ is to open this summer, promising “to delight locals and visitors alike with an authentic Irish experience offered nowhere else in the Lowcountry”.

A three-storey building, the owners have carried out extensive renovations and are promising Guinness and Irish whisky by the barrel-load, along with “delicious Irish cuisine” and live music.

With Wexford being home to Georgia Southern University’s European campus, links between Wexford and the US city have grown massively in recent years. However, the links date back to the 1840s and 1850s when people departed the South East in their droves for a new life in the US.

Savannah is home to one of the largest St Patrick’s Day parades in the world and in recent years, a delegation from Wexford County Council has made the annual trans-Atlantic trip to take part.

Located in the east corner of City Market in Savannah, the initial photos of the Wexford pub don’t indicate any kind of purple and gold colour scheme, however, images of the famous Pikeman from The Bullring, Commodore John Barry and other Wexford landmarks and historical figures adorn the walls.

It’s unclear if there’s a spot on the wall for our legendary All-Ireland winning team of ‘96, or if they have Yellowbelly on tap, but it’s certainly a work in progress and is likely to prove popular among the huge population of Wexford descendants in Savannah.
