Killorglin enjoy comprehensive win at home

MUNSTER JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 3 Killorglin 31 Waterford City 9

KILLORGLIN send Waterford City packing with a comprehensive victory at Ballymalis last Sunday.

The first quarter didn’t start very promisingly for the hosts as Waterford City settled well to slot over two early penalties and take a 6-0 lead after 20 minutes. Killorglin looked rusty but soon began to grow into the game.

A penalty from Luke O’Shea on the half hour mark got them on the scoreboard, and on the stroke of half-time a great break from John Morell saw John Michael Cronin O’Reilly ghosting off his shoulder for a superb try. O’Shea added the conversion and Killorglin took a 10-6 lead in at half-time.

Killorglin started the second half with intent and soon extended their lead. A good line out move and subsequent quick hands from the backs saw Seamus Doyle break hard, and his pass left Josh Morell with a simple touch down under the posts.

Waterford City reduced the margin to 17-9 from a penalty with 12 minutes left to play, but Killorglin were far from finished and put in a massive closing quarter. A break off an untidy scrum saw Andrew O’Reilly make a great carry up the field.

After a series of plays, Seamus Doyle made a super break to touch down and once again O’Shea added the conversion.

Soon afterwards, more pressure from the Killorglin forwards saw Josh Morell burst through from 10 metres to secure the bonus point fourth try.

Whilst the scoreline didn’t reflect the overall competitive nature of the game, the late finish was a testament to Killorglin’s level of fitness, and with a squad of 25 players present at the game the competition for starting places can only be healthy for the squad.

Killorglin face an away trip to Youghal next Sunday in the next round of the league and are nicely poised in second place in the table with thirteen points after three games played.
