All eyes will be on the High Court sitting this week as it begins its judicial review on the decision of an Bórd Pleanála to extend the planning permission granted for the building of the Shannon LNG plant along the Tarbert landbank. The outcome is likely to be decisive as to whether the €500 million project will proceed or not and at this stage is a source of concern for the people of North Kerry and West Limerick, due to the lack of employment opportunities and long delay in progressing the project.

Saturday 2 February is Candlemas Day and anybody wishing to have candles blessed should bring them along to the Vigil Mass on Saturday at 6pm.
WINDOW ON THE PAST
John Pius Boland, the Nationalist Member of Parliament represented South Kerry at Westminster from 1900 to 1918. He created considerable interest and commotion when in February 1906 in the House of Commons he produced a large placard issued by the Irish Industries Development Association of Tarbert, Co.Kerry. The Tarbert placard stated that every year Ireland spent in England and abroad some 6 million pounds for clothing, nearly 2 million pounds for boots and shoes, 1 hundred thousand pounds each for soap and matches. Boland, born to the rich flour milling family in Dublin became the first Irish person to win an Olympic gold medal when he won the tennis singles and doubles in the Athens Olympics of 1896. In parliament he championed issues like trade, education and the Irish language. His daughter Honor, widow of Fred Crowley, became the first female TD ever elected in Kerry when in 1945 she succeeded her husband as Fianna Fáil TD for South Kerry. West Limerick travelled to Cashel where they enjoyed a day-long feast of top class traditional entertainment.

TIDY TOWNS
The notion that Spring is just around the corner is evident by the sight of the bright display (albeit unseasonal) of fully blooming daffodils along the bridge wall at the eastern end of the village with many more along the route on the cusp of opening. A successful pre-spring clean-up from Barnagh to Devon Road took place during the week. Several bags full of rubbish were lined up along the route awaiting collection. Well done to the people who participated in the task and thanks to all who gave of their time, especially the two new residents from Australia. The plans to build stone walls around the rockeries are progressing and when the road works are completed the construction is expected to get underway.
