YEE-HAW – IT’S TIME FOR A HOEDOWN IN LISTOWEL!

- By TADHG EVANS

IT’S time to break out the stetsons and stilettos in Listowel as a fund-raising event with a difference aims to give a most-valued local group a helping hand.

Martin McCarthy and the Listowel Business and Community Alliance Group have put plans in place for a fund-raising barn dance in the town, one which looks set to prove a major boost to the renowned Listowel Tidy Towns.

The countdown to the event is well underway, with the cowboys and cowgirls set to descend on Listowel from 7.30pm on Friday, February 8.

The venue is Upper William Street, where a marquee will be put in place at a car-park to the back of three businesses involved in the organising: The Tankard, Mike the Pies, and the Saddle Bar. On the night, the Michael Collins Showband will provide entertainment, while there will also be a disco. Tickets will cost €15 and will cover a barbecue, and all funds will go to Listowel Tidy Towns and its planned purchase of a new van – which Chairperson Julie Gleeson explained will prove a big boost to her group in transporting their equipment.

It’s a significant vote of confidence for Listowel Tidy Towns, but one that’s been well-earned. After all, Listowel was last year named as the overall national winner of the Tidy Towns competition, and the new van will be a boost as the committee attempts to improve even on its terrific 2018 performance.

“It’s a very nice gesture,” Ms Gleeson told The Kerryman in recent days.

“The people and businesses in Listowel have been very good to us, and we are always very grateful for that.”

Tickets are available from members of the Listowel Tidy Towns Committee, The Saddle Bar, The Tankard, and Mike the Pies. For more information, you can phone Dara Costelloe at (087) 900 4032; Aiden O’Connor at (087) 925 5230; or Marina at (087) 055 6565.
