Aisling O’Loughlin: Katy’s Baby Bloom is a joy

- Aisling O’Loughlin aislingoloughlin

Let’s attempt a little experiment in an effort to raise our collective vibration away from any doomsday scenarios involving a word beginning with C. You could call it a sugar-coated placebo made out of a mixture of bubblegum pop and happy news.

OK, at the count of three everyone concentrate on Katy Perry’s baby bump. One. Two. Three. Here we go.

How cute does she look in her caped sequin playsuit getting the crowd going at the Cricket Women’s T20 World Cup in Melbourne this week? You can’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside witnessing her delight as she brings her special brand of fun and frolics to the winning Aussie team. It’s a joyous moment. Let’s all feel it together. Ommmmmm. Hold hands even. Actually, strike that. Sanitisers at the ready.

Keep at a safe distance and settle into the fuzz. We can do this.

If anyone can help lift the gloom, it’s Katy Perry. That baby is going to have a great mommy with fiancé Orlando Bloom, who has a nine-year-old son, Flynn, with ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

With International Women’s Day behind us and Mother’s Day before us, Katy’s Insta ode to her beloved grandmother Ann Pearl Hudson, who died this day last weekend aged 99, seems all the more poignant.

In the post the 35-year-old wrote about her nana who survived the Great Depression and raised three children on her own as a seamstress making G-strings for Vegas showgirls: “... when my stubbornness comes out, hell, that’s Ann. When my fighter spirit comes out, that’s Ann. When my style comes out, that’s Ann. May she rest in deep peace and kiss the forehead of the soul to come…” In the post the singer shares a video, discreetly filmed, in fairness, of her telling her grandmother on her deathbed of her happy news. ‘I’m pregnant, grandma! Katy is finally pregnant, she’s the last one, but I have a baby inside me and I wanted to tell that to you.’ There it is, the cycle of life in all its tragic beauty but in the right order as the old makes way for the new. Perry revealed she was pregnant in the music video for Never Worn White where she sings about looking forward to getting hitched to the English actor and starting a family together. On Twitter she wrote: ‘omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore...or carry around a big purse.’

There certainly had been a lot of strategically placed accessories in advance of the news and voluminous dresses and cover-up coats. I know that feeling of finally letting everyone know you have eaten all the pies and yes, you’re pregnant too. Sweet release. It’s a special time, that first one, the sheer incredulity that your body is making a baby and the natural protection and warmth you get from those around you. It never stops being utterly amazing.

The singer may have to park her Last Friday Night party tricks for the time being, but she seems to be happy to pause her dirty martini habit to make way for Baby Bloom. In the process, she’s given the world some much needed good news.
