Midsummer night’s party for Girl Guides
BOHERBUE Girl Guides hosted an aptly named ‘Midsummer’s Night Tea Party’ in the Cultúrlann, Newmarket last Friday.
It was a magical evening in a perfect setting, with friends and neighbours gathering to dine and later dance to the music of DJ Brian Aherne.
The event was a final fundraiser for the six senior branch girls from the Boherbue unit who were selected to represent Ireland as they travel internationally this year.
Hannah Walsh from Boherbue and Rachel Desmond, Lyre, will be travelling to Norway for two weeks in August to the Roverway International Camp, where up to 6,000 scouts and guides from all over the world will gather to participate in a series of challenges, workshops and outdoor activities.
Hannah and Rachel have been training for this event for almost 18 months and are looking forward to the prospect of bringing home new skills and knowledge to share with the younger girls in the unit.
Sheila O’Connor and Orlaith Aherne, Boherbue with Sadhbh O’Halloran, Kilcummin, were selected to participate in the Irish National contingent at the IGG World Centre in Switzerland in early July. They will be participating in leadership and team building exercises as well as meeting other international scouts and guides and getting in some hiking and sightseeing.
Earlier this year Lilly Walsh travelled with the Irish contingent to Pax Lodge, which is the IGG World centre based in London. They crammed in an enormous amount of sightseeing, history and even a West End show!!
The tagline of the Irish Girl Guides is ‘giving girls confidence’ and these events will certainly do that, and enable these girls to come back to their communities and give back through enhanced leadership skills and advocacy capabilities.
The Boherbue Girl Guides have run a number of fundraisers this year to subsidise the cost of these events and have been overwhelmed with the support they have received from their community.
At the Midsummer’s Night Tea Party they took the opportunity to thank all their supporters and in particular the sponsors of the lucky dip; Boherbue Co-Op , Burkes Homevalue, Kerry Agribusiness, Ger Drew Agri, Murphys Pharmacy, Bernard Moynihan, Boherbue Handball Club, Jackie Murphy Beautician, Gina Moynihan Beautician, Dairypower, Ingredient Solutions, Head to Toe Beauty Salon, The O’Halloran family and Karen Walsh, as well as numerous anonymous donations for which they are very appreciative.
