Low flying Tellus aircraft to operate locally

- KATIE GLAVIN

A low flying aircraft may be spotted over County Cork and neighbouring counties of South Limerick and West Waterford, as part of the Tellus Survey, up until the end of August.

The Tellus Survey is a nationwide programme that collects geochemical and geophysical data on rocks, soil and water across the country, helping to sustainably manage the environment, natural resources and protect public health into the future.

In order to continue with its work and collect this valuable data, the latest phase of the survey will see an aircraft flying at low heights locally from July until autumn 2021, weather permitting.

Weekly updates on the planned flight schedule, along with further information on the programme, are available at the Tellus website, www.tellus.ie

The manned aircraft will fly at a low level of 60 metres over rural areas, which is approximately eight times the height of a standard two storey house, and will rise to 240 metres over urban areas.

Sensitive livestock such as horses, pedigree cattle, sheep in lamb and poultry flocks, may startle as the sound of the plane is similar to that of a passing lorry.

Geological Survey Ireland have advised that anyone with concerns about the survey, particularly if they own sensitive lifestock, or anyone interested in finding out more about the project, can contact Tellus. A freephone information line is available on 1800 45 55 65 or you can visit www.tellus.ie
