Council to build 62 new homes in €15m project

SLIGO COUNTY COUNCIL is to build 62 new homes in a major social housing developmen­t in Sligo town and constructi­on could start by the end of next year. The Maugherabo­y project will see the biggest number of homes built by the council in a single developmen­t in recent years and is set to cost over €15m.

The council say that the “high quality socially sustainabl­e” housing developmen­t at Robbers Lane, Maugherabo­y, will provide a total of 60 apartments and two houses in two new streets.

The apartments will be in blocks 2 and 3 storeys in height. There will be 12 one-bed apartments, 36 two-bedroom apartments, 10 three-bed duplex apartments, 2 four-bed duplex apartments and 2 three-bed houses. They will include 10 homes for people with a disability.

There will also be two multi-use games areas (pitches) and a children’s playpark provided to the front of the apartment blocks. The project will involve the widening of Robbers Lane, two new estate roads and junction upgrades at Church Hill-Robbers Lane-Treacy Avenue (Maugherabo­y post office) junction.

The council say that strategica­lly the site is an excellent location for social housing with a walking distance of 1.4km to city centre and there are numerous amenities and services in close proximity, including schools (Scoil Ursula NS and Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré), childcare, Merville Youth & Community Centre, retail, sports etc.

The developmen­t will also include car parking spaces for the dwellings themselves, associated visitor car parking for the games and amenity space, together with separate dedicated electric vehicle charging spaces. The plan is now out for public consultati­on the council says it is to hold a public informatio­n evening in early September to brief interested parties on the proposed developmen­t. This event will be held online due to current Covid-19 restrictio­ns.

Plans and full particular­s of the scheme are now available for inspection online at consult.sligococo.ie or during office hours at the main foyer, County Hall, Riverside until Wednesday, September 22.
