Enniscrone from midday to 1pm.

EOGHAN RUA: A huge thank you to every one of you that sent messages of good luck and support to our ladies’ team for the Connacht Final. This was a huge day in the history of the club in that it’s the first team not just to win but to reach a Connacht Final since its formation in 2005.

There has been a massive number of people involved in the club down through the years between players, managers, committee members and supporters all of whom have played some part in getting the team of today to this point in their playing careers.

2020 was a strange year with the structure of the LGFA fixtures no exception. Our Sligo Championship campaign started mid-summer with our Connacht semi-final on October 3 and the build up from that day to now has been a rollercoaster for today’s panel and management. From small group trainings in separate pitches to training in pods in the cold and darkness of winter and individual training in the early months of 2021.

Ladies Gaelic football is alive and kicking in west Sligo and we are sure it will be kept that way for many years to come with this win being remembered in the history books.

ST JOHN’S: A fighting performance from St John’s under-12s in the B league saw them come from behind to snatch a well-deserved victory versus Gurteen Celtic in Gurteen

Community Park. St John’s started well, pushing up onto the Gurteen defence, creating many chances, culminating in a goal from Jack Glenister, finishing a powerful move that swept from the left to the right hand side. Some good midfield play from Gurteen earned them the equaliser, poaching a rebound in front of the posts. St John’s were unlucky to go behind, just before half time, with another good move from the Gurteen midfield. The second half started dramatically, with a frenetic goalmouth scramble in the St John’s box, and our defence bravely stopping every attempt being made in an exciting 20-second period, before James Broderick managed to grab the ball that become lodged under James Lineen on the goal line. This scare, however, brought out the very best in St John’s, with constant attacks being built from this point forward from all areas of the pitch – Senan Tully, Gaving Deering and Jack Glenister offering great options out wide, Danny Feeney and Jack Kelly driving up the middle, and Oscar Fahy constantly keeping their centre back on his toes. The comeback was on when, half-way through the second half, a cross from Gavin was met by Senan, who turned the ball back to Jack Kelly, finishing in the bottom-left hand corner. The St John’s defence was immense from that point on, with crunching tackles from Ryan Byrne, aerial dominance from James Lineen and lovely through-balls being played by Kevin Patton on the left. James Broderick had a field day in goals – launching full attacks on a short pitch with thumping clearances and restarts. The reward came in the last 10 minutes, with another move that swept from left to right, and another assist from Senan that was finished, again, by Jack Glenister for his second of the game. St John’s were on top for the rest of the game, but were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end this memorable match. 3-2 to St John’s FC.
