‘A multi nations muddle’

Sweden v Ukraine Tuesday, Hampden Park, 8pm

- By RICHARD EDWARDS

THERE is enough uncertainty in 2021 without UEFA creating plenty more.

That is the view of Paul Balsom, the Torquay-born member of Sweden’s backroom staff, who is currently involved in his ninth major tournament with the Scandinavian side.

That figure currently puts Sweden’s performance manager on level pegging with former England physio Gary Lewin on an all-time list.

But even though he would love to make it to double figures in Qatar next winter, he hopes he does not have to experience a multi-country format competition again soon.

“It’s very tough not knowing where you’ll be playing your next match,” he said.

“That would usually be the case, but, when you have a tournament in one place, at least you know you’ll be playing in the same country.

“As it stands, I’m talking to you when I don’t know whether our next game is in Scotland or Denmark!

“I don’t think we’ll see a tournament like this again.

“The next European Championships will be held in Germany and the World Cup in Qatar will be far more manageable.

“I think the main lesson from this tournament is that having a multi-country event is one that shouldn’t be repeated.”

As it transpired, Balsom – who left his role as Leicester City’s head of performance innovation after 13 years this summer – will walk out at Hampden Park for a last-16 clash with Ukraine on Tuesday night.

The winner of that match will then head to Rome to meet England or Germany.

Leaving the possibility of a re-run of the 2018 World Cup quarter-final against Gareth Southgate’s side.

“We’re still the same Sweden,” he said. “We play 4-4-2 and you know what you’re going to get.”
