determined to make a life long change and break bad habits.”

His dad is delighted to see the difference losing weight has made to Jack’s life.

He said: “It was heartbreaking to see Jack so miserable and unhappy. He would just hide away in his room.

“We tried to get him to join different clubs but he didn’t have the confidence or interest to try new things.”

Shane said: “If there are other parents in the same situation I would encourage them to get their son or daughter to join a slimming group.

“If they are not sure about it, just sit in on a class and you will see the support that is there for them. If you join together Jack before losing weight you will help to motivate each other and push each other to make changes.”

Jack, who has three younger siblings – Martin, 11, Alex, eight, and three-yearold Conor – has joined Balbriggan Rugby Club and he has just returned from a 10-day scout Jamboree in Denmark.

Shane believes his son would not have had the confidence to go on the trip with the scouts before his dramatic weight loss.

Jack’s waist has shrunk from 38 inches to 32 inches and his weight has dropped from 12st 2lb to 10st 5lb. Jack’s words of advice to any other young person concerned about their weight are “not to be ashamed and hide Shane has now lost four stone away”. Do not to worry about what others think or say either. I was bullied for a long time over my weight and I was determined not to let the bullies win so if I can make this lifestyle change any young person can do it.

“The hardest part of the journey is those first steps into the group but you will be so happy you did it.”

His mum Tanya said: “I am so proud of the progress that both Shane and Jack have made. It is great to see Jack have an appreciation for cooking. He now enjoys trying to cook different meals and has really taken to his lifestyle change.”

Shane says he has lost nearly four stone and dropped from weighing 22st 5lb with a 44-inch waist and wearing a XXXL top to 18st 9lb.

He said: “I have not set a final target just yet as I plan to reach 13 stone. This is a long journey, not a quick fix.”
