MURPHY SAYS FOLEY WILL PLAY

- ■■Pat NOLAN

KERRY selector Diarmuid Murphy has confirmed that

Jason Foley (inset) WILL feature in this year’s Championship after suffering an ankle injury against Roscommon last Sunday. However, the full-back is set to miss the Munster Championship campaign, which gets underway for Kerry with a semi-final against Cork or Limerick in April.

“It’s unlikely he’ll take any part in the Munster Championship this year for us but after that we’d be hopeful enough that he’ll see some action so we’ll see, we’ll see,” said Murphy.

“It depends on how quickly he recovers after that but unlikely for Munster Championship.

“The swelling on his ankle has to come down and to be fair to Jason, he’s not a fella who’s had a lot of injuries over the years.

“Some guys are quick healers and more fellas aren’t so hopefully he’ll be back in action sooner or later.”

Fears

Initial fears were the injury could be season-ending for the Ballydonoghue man. Murphy said: “Yeah, absolutely and it was very worrying at the time because it looked like a very significant injury but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a seasonender anyway, definitely, but we’ll see, we’ll see how he recovers. “Jason’s done a great job for us, for Kerry in general over the last good few years now and he’s been a settled presence there in the No 3 jersey. “He’s going to be a big loss of course but we’ve been working hard on our squad during the League this year and there’s other fellas there who are going to get a chance to step up and play in real competitive games and big games for us in the Munster Championship and maybe onwards as well so that’s why we’ve got our squad and we’ve got to back our squad as best we can.”
