HONOR’S latest smartphone Magic6 Pro has earned five Golden Labels from the DXOMARK labs and is the first smartphone ever to do so.

XIAOMI’S budget brand offshoot Redmi is internatio­nally renowned for making some of the absolute best value smartphone­s, although it is not a name too widely known in Ireland yet.

The Redmi Note 13 series is a range of phones that each cover a different price segment aimed at more budget-conscious consumers.

I’ve been testing the highestend model, Redmi Note 13 Pro+, which costs just €499 sim-free from Harvey Norman and Currys.

I’m not a fan of how much space the logo and text take up on the frosted glass covered rear of the device, but aside from that the matte-aluminium-framed unit looks and feels premium.

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ sports a dazzling bright and colourful curved 6.67in AMOLED screen with a superfast 120Hz refresh rate. The 1.5K resolution (2712 x 1200 pixels) and 1800 nits of peak brightness both score high marks for a phone at this price point. The screen comes with Gorilla Glass Victus protection.

You also get a 200MP camera manufactur­ed by Samsung, which comes with a large 1/1.4in image sensor, an f/1.65 aperture and optical image stabilisat­ion.

The brain of the device is a midtier Mediatek Dimensity 7200 Ultra chip. This is like the chip running the Nothing Phone 2a that costs €100 less.

It’s perfectly fine for everyday use and even a bit of casual gaming.

The software experience includes incredibly fluid animations from MIUI 14 which is laid on top of Android 13 out of the box. The firm said it will roll out three Android OS updates.

Other features include a fast and reliable fingerprin­t sensor in the display, dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support, an IR blaster, NFC for contactles­s payments, Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 6 and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Overall, a
