Chelsea eyeing bid for Gordon

- ■■Chris McKENNA

CHELSEA are preparing to test Everton’s resolve with a €50m bid for Anthony Gordon.

The Toffees’ stance remains that the attacking midfielder is not for sale at any price.

Everton have already rebuffed a verbal offer of around €45m from the London club.

But Chelsea are not being deterred and they’re readying a bid of around €50m.

Gordon (21) is highly regarded at Goodison Park and seen as one of the stars of the future.

But Chelsea are not going to take no for an answer yet as they prepare to put the Toffees under pressure.

Boss Frank Lampard has seen the purse strings loosened in recent weeks with the €40m capture of Amadou Onana and €25m signing of Dwight McNeil.

Reunion

Everton don’t want to sell any more firstteam players after the loss of Richarlison to Tottenham earlier in the summer.

It is not known if the Blues would offer any players to sweeten a deal, while the Toffees have no interest in a reunion with Ross Barkley, who is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard has always insisted he doesn’t want to lose the England Under-21 star, and chairman Bill Kenwright has already fought off attempts from Newcastle, Spurs and Chelsea to prise him away.

But with the transfer window ticking down, Chelsea can offer the prospect of Champions League football, and the temptation of a central role in manager Thomas Tuchel’s plans as he looks to build a new young team.

Everton offered Gordon a new contract three weeks ago, but that remains unsigned, and the player’s representatives insists he won’t put pen to paper.
