TRIDENT CAN LOOK FAB’ FOR ANDRE AT NEWMARKET

-

THE Tattersalls Stakes is the feature race at Newmarket today and Andre Fabre’s TRIDENT (2.45) looks to be a cut above his closely-matched rivals.

The four runners who have been given marks by the BHA handicapper are separated by just 2lb on ratings, and are Listed class in essence.

On the other hand, Trident improved to finish second in a Group 1 last time, and his trainer rarely leaves English soil empty handed.

EILEENDOVER (3.20) is unexposed granted a test of stamina on the Flat, and looked to have plenty of staying power in bumpers, so looks the one to beat in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes.

A couple of her rivals near the head of the betting look suspect stayers at this trip.

Test

Pam Sly’s mare ran well enough in the Park Hill Stakes last time, while suggesting she wanted more of a test, and this represents a drop in grade.

The Discover Newmarket Handicap is trappy but, despite mixed efforts this year, TORCELLO (3.55) makes plenty of appeal, and Shaun Lycett’s charge is reunited with Oisin Murphy (right), who was aboard when the son of Born To Sea won this corresponding event in 2017.

Torcello was then made favourite to win the Old Rowley Cup over C&D, but was badly drawn and finished midfield. That was his only defeat in four starts at Newmarket and he won here in May.

That came on the back of poor runs at different tracks. BOSSIPOP (3.30) hasn’t shown much in recent starts but does like Pontefract, with two wins and three places from six starts. There are reasons for thinking a better effort

might be forthcoming today.

He’s largely been racing in better class handicaps after his win here in May but he’s now a pound lower than that mark and it’s worth noting he’s also entered up twice at Ripon this Saturday, including a 0-105, where he needs a penalty to get him into the weights proper.

He appears badly drawn on the outside, but those drawn lowest are hold-up types, and the chance of him getting to the front — he has gained all but one of his lifetime wins by making all — are much better than they would appear at first glance.
