Operation Transformation fitness expert hits back over criticism
OPERATION Transformation’s Karl Henry has come out strongly against critics of the show, insisting it will not shy away from talking about weight.
The fitness expert, who has been a stalwart of the RTE show since it began 15 years ago, claimed the show played an important role, given Ireland’s rising rates of obesity.
He told the Irish Mirror: “As a nation we are getting heavier, we are getting more unhealthy, our numbers are going up and we need to show people how they can make simple changes.
“I think we all know the health related issues related to weight, and showing people how they can improve their lifestyle and be weight aware can improve their health.
“Do we shy away from the fact we talk about weight? No. Should we? Absolutely not.
“Because it is important for your health to be weight aware.”
It comes in the wake of a recent backlash since the show returned to screens this month, with eating disorder group Bodywhys saying it is “triggering” for some affected, while thousands have signed a petition calling on RTE to axe the programme.
Now into its 15th season, Karl believes the series has evolved, and feels many are basing their opinions on past shows.
He said:“we adapt every year. Every year we make changes and adaptations, it’s a very
different show to how it would have been in season one, two, three. I think everyone should watch the show before they make an opinion.
“Some of the opinions are being based on shows from years ago, but if you have a look at the show now you’ll see how we have changed.”
Asked if he feels the show will stand the test of time and continue for another 15 seasons, he added: “I do [think it is here to stay]. I think the show is going to be required.”
It comes as HSE reports revealed Ireland has one of the highest levels of obesity in Europe, with 60% of adults and over one in five children and young people overweight or obese.
