They say time heals but not for me..those few seconds of evil & depravity changed our lives
Slain detective’s wife tells of pain 25 years after murder
THE wife of Detective Garda Jerry Mccabe yesterday told how “evil and depravity” changed her life for ever, adding “They say time heals - but not for me.”
Marking the 25th anniversary of his death, Ann Mccabe said she still hopes all those responsible for his murder will be brought to justice.
A ceremony was held to remember her husband yesterday in Adare, Co Limerick, with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Justice Minister Heather Humphreys attending
On the morning of June 7, 1996, Gda Mccabe and his partner Ben O’sullivan were on duty escorting a post office cash and mail van through the town when their unmarked car was rammed from behind by an IRA gang.
Det Gda Mccabe was killed almost instantly and Det O’sullivan survived despite being shot 11 times.
Mrs Mccabe said: “In that few seconds of evil and depravity, my family and the lives of our five children changed forever.”
Pearse Mcauley, Michael O’neill,
Jeremiah Sheehy and Kevin Walsh were initially charged with murder. But the State then accepted manslaughter pleas after key witnesses refused to co-operate.
A fifth man, John Quinn, was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery.
Two other men are still wanted by gardai for questioning about the killing and Mccabe’s wife hopes they will face justice.
She said: “Six evil men were involved in that ambush. Two are still on the run.
“I have no doubt that the combined efforts of the Department of Justice and of An Garda Siochana, we’ll eventually track those down and bring them back to Ireland for justice to be done.”
Ann also told how their two sons and now his grandson are all now members of the force.
