I won’t Ed off to USA

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN BY MICHAEL SCULLY

EDDIE PEPPERELL will play a run of Uk-based

European Tour events instead of the US PGA.

Lee Westwood said this week he is ready to miss the season’s first Major in August due to quarantine.

Westwood expects to return at the Betfred British Masters at Close House on July 30. And the European Tour are aiming for UK events in August, at Forest of Arden, Hanbury Manor and Celtic Manor.

World No.65 Pepperell said: “If the rumours from the European Tour are true and there might be some golf to play in the UK in

July and August, I will prioritise that.”

INTERVIEWED by the BBC in

December, Philip Doyle said Olympic success isn’t everything – that people can find success in other aspects of their lives.

He feels just as strongly about that after the last two months on the frontline.

“I got a lot of stick for that from some people, who said to me, ‘Oh, so you don’t want to go to the

Olympics, do you? You don’t want to win it? It doesn’t matter?’.

“A lot of athletes said they actually enjoyed that outlook on it.

“It took a lot of pressure off them to say ‘Oh, you don’t need a medal to be successful in what you’re doing’. Because not all athletes win medals. “So it was quite controversial. “Although I want to win an Olympic medal and that’s up there with what I want to achieve – and myself and Ronan (Byrne, double partner) would give anything to get there and push as hard as we can – we know if we don’t make it, we haven’t failed.

“There are so many other aspects in life. Obviously as an athlete you give back by promoting sport, improving kids’ health and getting people more active.

“But now, having a direct impact in someone’s health while they’re there in front of you in the hospital, I get the same rush off that.

“I’m absolutely loving being back and it has reinforced that idea to me that I do have two loves in this world, and I’m very happy to go between them.”

Doyle has seen the reports – including yesterday’s one by IOC chief Thomas Bach (inset) – that the Tokyo Games are still under threat due to Covid-19, despite the postponement by a year.

“My mum keeps me up to date with all breaking news, so I heard that,” he laughed.

“This is just casting more doubt and what I need to do now is ignore that.

“Rumours and things will swirl around so much over the next few months and no one knows.

“I try to ignore things like that and just work on the things I can control.”
