DIEDHIOU: WE DID THIS FOR BENIK’S GIRL

FAMARA DIEDHIOU dedicated Bristol City’s first win of the season over a top-six side to

Benik Afobe and his family.

Stoke City loanee Afobe’s two-year-old daughter Amora died 10 days ago.

Robins boss Lee Johnson hailed both sets of fans, who paid their respects with a minute’s applause on the two-minute mark and by singing Afobe’s name.

Diedhiou said: “We fought for Benik’s daughter. The win is for him, our thoughts were with Benik and his daughter. The crowd was unbelievable with their reaction to Benik. It’s just so very sad.”

Johnson’s side honoured their heartbroken team-mate, sidelined with a cruciate knee ligament injury, with their best display of the season. It lifted them to fourth – level on points with Fulham.

Josh Brownhill deservedly headed City in front from Niclas Eliasson’s 26th-minute cross.

Diedhiou started City’s stunning 76th-minute second goal on halfway and finished it with a two-yard tap-in. Between Diedhiou’s touches the slick passing and movement was sprinkled with a dragback from Han-noah Massengo and a Brownhill backheel.

Aboubakar Kamara pulled one back on 86 minutes and Fulham were convinced they should have had an injury-time penalty for a Callum O’dowda challenge on Neeskens Kebano. Kebano then hit the bar deep into injury time.

Cottagers boss Scott Parker said: “On another day, the one that hits the bar, the decision that’s obviously a penalty, could turn a different way.”
