Frustration as Gunners blow it again

- BY DARREN LEWIS

ANOTHER season, another feeling of what might have been for Arsenal.

Capable of pulsating games, capable of thrilling goals, but so often let down by terrible defending.

With the signing of Alexandre Lacazette (below), Arsene Wenger looked to have snared the fox in the box to feast on the glut of chances created by his serial thrillers.

But, while they remain fabulous to watch, they still frustrate as a club, as – for one reason or another – they always seem to fall short.

The lack of steel in the middle, the missed sitters up front, the injuries, the run-ins with referees.

There is always a reason why the Gunners seem to shoot themselves in the foot – as they did against Liverpool.

Here, it came with just 27 minutes of the game remaining.

Jack Wilshere had smashed in a quite superb opener – the lead that Arsenal’s industry and creativity had deserved.

From there, they should have seen it out against a Chelsea side working hard, but huffing and puffing up front, with Alvaro Morata having a ’mare.

Just four minutes later, however, they seemed to have blown it again.

Hector Bellerin challenged Eden Hazard in the box and just caught the Chelsea star’s foot.

We all know referee Anthony Taylor needs no second invitation as far as Arsenal are concerned. Penalty.

Then, in the 84th minute, after Marcos Alonso stabbed in Davide Zappacosta’s cross, it looked like the same old story for the Gunners.

Bellerin made late amends with a brilliant half-volley to level things.

But, as always, Arsenal had once again found a way to snatch frustration from the jaws of victory.
