BOY, 15, MOWN DOWN BY HIT & RUN BMW AT SHOP CENTRE

- BY NIALL O’CONNOR

A CAR mounted a footpath and mowed down a 15-year-old boy in a hit and run horror yesterday.

The vehicle, believed to be a BMW, appeared to deliberately plough into the teenager near a busy shopping centre before speeding off.

Witnesses said the injured youth went “over the bonnet”. Gardai were last night hunting the driver, who was described as a man wearing a suit. The boy was hit as he stood outside Blanchardstown Shopping Centre in West Dublin at 5pm.

Witness Rebecca Wade, 21, said: “I was sitting in Starbucks and a car suddenly came up that path from the Leisureplex.

“He was moving fast – it looked like he was moving at about 50kmh. He really sped up.

“The kids just dispersed everywhere. The car turned around and the driver shouted at the kids. He got back into the car and went back at the group again. One boy was hit and he went over the bonnet.”

Rebecca, a trainee mental health nurse, went to help the victim. She said: “He was OK and he was stable but he was obviously in shock.

“He was going in and out of consciousness and had a cut hand.”

Rebecca said she was told the driver was a man in a suit.

A Garda spokesman confirmed officers responded to the incident and were appealing for witnesses.
