Garbine hoping to see another reign for Spain

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

GARBINE MUGURUZA claimed it is time for another Spanish name to be added to the Wimbledon winners’ board after 23 years. But the world No.15, who lost to Serena Williams in the 2015 final, has to beat another Williams sister first. Last year’s French Open winner crushed Magdalena Rybarikova (right) 6-1 6-1 in only 64 minutes to reach her third Grand Slam final. The only previous Spanish winner here – Conchita Martinez in 1984 – is coaching Muguruza at this tournament and cheered her to victory in her semi-final. “All the great champions have won this tournament,” said Muguruza. “I always stare at the wall where all the names are of the previous winners. “All the names that I read, I know all of them. For the last years, you see a lot of Williams’ surname. So I look forward to put a Spanish name back there. I would like to see my name there hopefully.” At 37, Williams is the oldest Grand Slam singles finalist since Martina Navratilova finished runner-up at Wimbledon in 1994. And the five-time champion, who lost to Muguruza in their last match in Rome in May, said she will seek advice from her absent sister on how to beat the Spaniard. “She lost here against Serena so I definitely will ask her,” said the world No.11. “I’m sure she’s going to give me hopefully some things that will make a difference for me in the match. “I miss her so much. Even more yesterday and today. I try to take the same courage on the court that she would have. I did think of that. I tried to do the things she would do. “I don’t know that I play exactly the same way she does. But I really tried to be inspired by it.”
