The wearing of the green: Ruth wows Tinseltown

- By Bronwyn O’Neill

IRISH actress Ruth Negga looked stunning at the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles – one of the first post-lockdown celebrity events in Hollywood.

Ruth wore an Arnold Scaasi green and silver gown and was with some of her co-stars from the Netflix film, Passing, about a black woman passing for white during the Harlem Renaissance in 1920s New York.

The Motion Picture Museum opening gala was also graced by Meg Ryan who made a rare public appearance as she arrived in a floor-length, black and pink floral gown by Ulyana Sergeenko.

Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber went red carpet official with her Australian beau, Jacob Elordi, while Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom were the picture of love as they posed for shots.

The directorial debut of actress Rebecca Hall, Passing, which was shot in black and white, will be in Irish cinemas on October 29, followed by its release on Netflix on November 10.

Acclaimed on its premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, the film is adapted from the celebrated 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen.

According to Netflix, the film tells the story of two black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Negga), who can ‘pass’ as white but choose to live on opposite sides of the colour line during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York.

‘As their lives become more deeply intertwined, Irene finds her once-steady existence upended by Clare, and Passing becomes a riveting examination of obsession, repression and the lies people tell themselves and others to protect their carefully constructed realities,’ Netflix said.
