PLAYER RATINGS

- By SAMI MOKBEL

REAL MADRID (3-5-2) TEAM AVERAGE 6.3

THIBAUT COURTOIS 7 Brilliant stop to deny Werner’s point-blank effort only to be beaten by Pulisic moments later.

EDER MILITAO 6.5 Looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights early on but played a role in his side’s leveller.

RAPHAEL VARANE 6 One of the world’s best but looked anything but as Chelsea ran Madrid’s rearguard ragged.

NACHO 6 Took a while to adapt to the change of system but eventually settled into the game.

DANI CARVAJAL 6 Overworked defensively down Real’s right hand side as Chelsea smelt blood early on.

LUKA MODRIC 6.5 Chelsea didn’t give the Croatian a second to breathe in the engine room. Just as well.

CASEMIRO 6 Immense at Anfield in the quarters but took a while to settle down here as Chelsea made hay.

TONI KROOS 6.5 Saw more of the ball than any other Real player, but Chelsea didn’t allow him to have his usual impact.

MARCELO 5.5

Went missing defensively at the start but finally regained his composure. Not at his excellent best.

SUBSTITUTES

Hazard 6 (for Vinicius 66), Odriozola (for Carvajal 77), Asensio (for Marcelo 77) Rodrygo (for Benzema 90). Not used: Lunin, Altube, Gutierrez, Blanco, Arribas, Mariano, Isco.

KARIM BENZEMA 7

Brilliantly equalised for his side against the run of play. A constant threat for the hosts.

VINICIUS JUNIOR 6 Tried his best to stretch Chelsea, but the Blues defence kept him under control for the most part.

ZINEDINE ZIDANE 6 Will be happy with how his team responded to their opponents’ blistering start, but his decision to change the system didn’t work.

CHELSEA (3-4-3) TEAM AVERAGE 6.9

EDOUARD MENDY 6.5 Had little to do apart from pick the ball out of the net as Chelsea threw caution to the wind.

ANDREAS CHRISTENSEN 6.5 Lost Benzema for a split second just before his leveller but an otherwise strong night.

THIAGO SILVA 6.5 Will be disappointed by Benzema’s goal but eased through the game as a calming influence.

ANTONIO RUDIGER 7 Continued his fine form since the turn of the year. Set up Pulisic’s excellent opener.

CESAR AZPILICUETA 6.5 Lost a crucial header to Militao for Real’s leveller but was largely dependable.

N’GOLO KANTE 7 So much energy and quality in central midfield. Superb at both ends of the pitch.

JORGINHO 8 Massively influential and looked imperious throughout. Everything went through the Italian.

BEN CHILWELL 7

Provided a good outlet for his team. Saw plenty of the ball and generally used it well.

CHRISTIAN PULISIC 7.5 Took his early goal brilliantly and caused Real’s defence problems with his movement.

TIMO WERNER 5.5 Missed a gilt-edged opportunity to open the scoring. It didn’t get much better for German.

MASON MOUNT 7 Buzzed around the pitch causing problems wherever he ventured. Truly belongs at this level.

SUBSTITUTES James 6 (for Azpilicueta 66), Ziyech 6 (for Pulisic 66), Havertz 6 (for Werner 66). Not used: Arrizabalaga, Caballero, Zouma, Alonso, Palmieri, Gilmour, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi, Abraham.

THOMAS TUCHEL 7 Will be delighted with his side’s impressive display — but will leave Spain feeling his charges should have left with more.

REFEREE DANNY MAKKELIE (Hol) 6 Showed no signs of pro-Chelsea bias despite Real Madrid’s pre-match concerns.
