BON JOVI TO ANSWER FANS’ PRAYERS WITH DRIVE-IN CONCERTS

- By Jessica O’Sullivan

IF YOU’VE been living on a prayer these past few months, you might welcome news that legendary rockers Bon Jovi are returning to Ireland for three live concerts this summer... well, sort of.

In fact, the shows will be drive-in events to watch a streamed gig by the US band.

The one-night-only screening will take place on May 22 at Leopardstown Racecourse in Dublin, Meath’s Slane Castle and Cork Racecourse, with each venue limited to 250 tickets per screening.

Billed as ‘Bon Jovi’s First Drive-In Concert’, the gig will be recorded to broadcast on the big screen, then enjoyed from the comfort of your car. Tickets will cost from €55 plus booking fee per car, which can contain up to five people and go on sale today at 5pm.

The event is part of an exclusive partnership between Retro Drive-in Movies and Encore Live to screen a series of new and exclusive music concerts by some of the world’s biggest acts at drivein venues in Ireland.

Bon Jovi are the first in a series of big names beaming concerts around the world this summer.

Last summer, Garth Brooks performed a live stream concert to 300 drive-in theatres across North America to great success.

Country music star Blake Shelton has also announced a drive-in concert series in the States after the box office success of Brooks, adding his name to major box office lineups on July 25.

Last year, the Live at the Drive-In series of concerts were cancelled due to the pandemic, including gigs at Cork’s Showgrounds, which were due to be staged to fans who were left disappointed.

Gavin James was due to headline the series while Hermitage Green and Aslan were also due to play a host of gigs in Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny and Waterford. Aslan pulled out in early July for unrelated reasons.

James shared a video after the cancellations to express his disappointment after the shows were called off after the outbreak of the pandemic.

‘Many months of work has been put into these gigs getting the crews and the security back out doing what they do. It’s sad it’s not happening,’ he said.

‘Enjoy the show from comfort of your car’
