Show will toy with your emotions

- By Archie Mitchell

THE Late Late Toy Show will have an emotional opening number tonight which will see Irish children around the world come together to warm the hearts of viewers.

Host Ryan Tubridy was brought to tears when he saw the performance of the Take That single Rule The World in rehearsals.

Children from Times Square in New York to South Korea will sing ‘the stars are coming out tonight’ for their extended family back home and for the nation.

The performance will be led by singer

Eva Norton in the RTÉ studio and she will joined by performers as far away as Bahrain, Dubai and South Africa. Tubridy said: ‘I don’t think there will be a dry eye in the land tonight when this performance is beamed across the country.

‘Seeing these children who have muchmissed and much-loved family back here in Ireland come together to sing from every corner on Rule The World will soften the hardest of hearts. It’s a performance that encapsulates the year that was. I’m not ashamed to admit that it really did stop me in my tracks and I was overcome with emotion.

‘There are going to be many memorable moments on tonight’s Late Late Toy Show – this is certainly a special one.’

The set of tonight’s show is inspired by Roald Dahl and will feature nods to Willy Wonka, The Twits and James And The Giant Peach. And though this year won’t have an in-studio audience, Tubridy will be joined by a virtual crowd.

The show will see Tubs not only perform the opening number but also lead a special song and dance halfway through.

Toy-testing children will pop up to show off their favourite toys, only this year they will have to be socially distanced. But one thing that won’t change is Ryan’s array of colourful Christmas gear.

The Late Late Toy Show will air tonight on RTÉ One at 9.35pm.
