‘IT’S JUST ANOTHER GAME OF FOOTBALL’

- DAVID SNEYD

NO sooner had David McMillan returned to the Dundalk dressing room following Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Rosenborg than he was informed by team-mate Sean Gannon of his place in Champions League history. Only one Irishman has now scored more than the Dubliner in the competition after his clinical header against the Norwegian giants took his tally to seven in his League of Ireland career. And the player ahead of him? Roy Keane, the former Manchester United captain boasting a record of 15 goals during his time at Old Trafford. ‘Things like that I can look back on that when I’m retired and I won’t be doing that for a while yet,’ said McMillan (above) who was linked with a move to Rosenborg last year on the back of his scoring exploits. ‘It’s just another game of football for me. Obviously you want to do well on the big nights and try to help your team out and I’m glad to have scored but probably disappointed overall not to have won.’ There are far more pressing matters on his mind and Wednesday’s second leg in Trondheim priority number one after Rosenborg gained the upper hand with an away goal at Oriel Park. It’s score or bust for Dundalk but they were in the exact same situation this time last year when FH Hafnarfjarðar pilfered a point in County Louth before the Lilywhites eventually kick-started their epic European journey with a 2-2 draw in Iceland. ‘We can draw belief from that and go over there and whether it be a scoring draw or a win we believe we can go over there and get the right result,’ McMillan added. ‘But I was a little bit surprised by how they set up and next week I’d expect it to be quite different. We’ll give them the respect they deserve and hopefully we can get the result we need. ‘I think it might suit us a little bit. [Wednesday] was a bit of cat and mouse, both sides sat off a little bit and gave people time on it. I think next week on the counter-attack it might suit us a little bit with the quick players that we have.’ And with Ireland’s Champions League goal machine now in form, Dundalk always have a chance.
