Saoirse’s totally tropical Golden moment

A DUBLIN salon has had a priceless international endorsement as actress Saoirse Ronan named it three times during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday.

Saoirse, 21, told the host how she learned that she had been nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Brooklyn while having her nails done at Tropical Popical on South William Street.

She said: ‘I didn’t know the Globe nominations were coming out that day. The day they came out I was in Dublin and I was getting my nails done.

‘It’s called Tropical Popical, so there’s palm trees and flamingos and you feel like you’re in Ibiza when you’re just getting your nails done in Dublin.

‘So I’m in the corner drinking Lilt out of a coconut cup and I’m telling everyone how happy I am and Bieber is playing in the background.’

Salon owner Andrea Horan had hoped the salon’s name would be mentioned as she received a call from the show’s researchers beforehand to ask if they could use a photograph of the star from the salon’s Instagram account, but said it was ‘a dream come true’ that Tropical Popical had been named three times.

She said: ‘It was just outrageous. It was like something that was made up.

‘The way you’d like it to happen was the way it happened. It was just crazy, especially considering it was The Ellen Show.

‘When we were travelling when we were younger and when we were setting up Tropical Popical, myself and my sister used to have a list of things we were going to do for the day and we’d be like, “Ellen is on, we have to wait until that’s over.”

‘We’d be halfway through the day before we got to leave.

‘It’s just so funny. Then to go from that to her talking about us is just crazy. She’s so sound. She didn’t have to do that.’

Ms Horan said Saoirse found out she had been nominated for the award back in December.

She said: ‘She was in with her mam and a few pals that she always comes in with.

‘Her phone kept ringing and she was saying “Ah no, it’s grand, I just want to chill out.”

‘But it kept ringing and kept ringing. The girls said just to answer it. She was on the phone and then she hung up and said, “Oh my God, I’ve just been nominated for a Golden Globe.” We couldn’t believe it.

‘She was sitting up on the pedi-station doing her media interviews. We could hear her talking to The Wall Street Journal and People Magazine.’

The salon’s nail technician Chloe Gilbert had done white and golden nails complete with golden baubles for Saoirse that day.

Ms Horan said the salon’s phone had been ringing off the hook since they were mentioned on US television and clients had even booked appointments for next Christmas.

She said: ‘We’ve had messages from America all through the night.’

Tropical Popical on Dublin’s South William Street was set up three years ago by sisters Andrea and Michelle Horan.

Celebrity clients include Vogue Williams, Rosanna Davison and Made In Chelsea’s Alexandra ‘Binky’ Felstead.
