Lee knows he had point on his mind

-

AS someone who, at 17 years of age, once scored a goal in Croke Park and did not know anything about it until after the game, my views on Lee Keegan’s goal last Sunday surely carry a heavier weight than most others. And my judgment? The Mayo defender, who had a simply spell-binding afternoon against Donegal, was trying to kick a point, no question. He was over-striding and did not pack enough power in his left boot when he tried to kick his point, which ended up a goal, and acted as the most silent killer of all in Mayo’s performance. Keegan, of course, has decided to keep people thinking. ‘It’s a hot topic, alright,’ he hinted, though he did seem to ask people to believe his goal was something ingenious. He’s still a young man, and he’s entitled to let Mayo supporters think that he plays the game fast and dangerous, I guess. In my case, however, my cover was blown when I walked off the field and asked the first Meathman I met on the sideline why was the scoreboard giving us a goal in our win? I’d taken a good look at the same scoreboard a few times before the end of the minor game, and I’d come to the conclusion that it was either wonky, or else the man in charge of things up there was still on the drink. It was the first goal I scored in the ground, and I had to wait five years for the next. But I never did get the chance to shrug my shoulders and ask others to work out in their heads whether I actually had the cojones to lob the goalkeeper from the 21yard line. Or not?
