DUP leader’s family trolled over support for England

- By Brett Campbell

DUP leader Gavin Robinson and his family have been subjected to “nasty, hate-filled responses” after publicly supporting England during the Euros final.

Mr Robinson’s wife Lindsay shared a picture of the politician and their son watching the match on Sunday evening.

The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain with Mikel Oyarzabal’s winning goal coming in the 86th minute.

Posting on Monday, Mrs Robinson revealed trolls had targeted the family online.

She wrote: “Last night I shared a photo of my husband with our son (10 yrs old) who was excited to watch football.

“I’m not a big fan of the sport but his love of it seems pretty normal to me. Some of the nasty, hate-filled responses to it are anything but normal. Sort yourselves out.”

Some other politicians were unable to hide their delight at England’s heartbreak in the final.

Sinn Fein president Mary Lou Mcdonald had already been posting “Olé Olé Olé” on X before the match ended in tears for Gareth Southgate’s side. “Felicidades,” she added when the final whistle was blown.

“Comhghairdeas to the champions of Europe.”

The posts attracted a mixed reaction, with some branding them as “shameful” and “childish”.

However, Ms Mcdonald doubled down.

“Sorry. Just work with us on this one,” she added.

A number of social media users defended Ms Mcdonald and claimed that all she had done was congratulate the winners of the tournament.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey was also criticised after he shared images of the Spanish side celebrating their victory.

“Ah well,” he captioned a post which showed England captain Harry Kane with his head in his hands

A user replied: “The working for ALL Maskey slips as usual.”

SDLP MLA Cara Hunter was accused of showing “a lack of class” with her post-match commentary on X.

“Yeooooo get in. #EURO2024,” she wrote alongside a video of a Spain fan marking himself with the sign of the cross.
