Mamata suffers head injury after fall at home, discharged

WEST BENGAL Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sustained a major injury after she reportedly fell and hit her head against a glass showcase at her residence in Kolkata on Thursday. She was rushed to state-run SSKM Hospital and was released after getting four stitches on her head, officials said.

According to reports, the CM had gone to Gariahat at Ekdalia Evergreen Club to inaugurate a statue of former minister Subrata Mukherjee. After the programme, she returned to her residence at Harish Chatterjee Street in Kolkata. “She was with her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee and other relatives when the incident occurred. She was walking in her drawing room and suddenly slipped. She fell down and hit her head against a glass showcase. She had a deep cut on her forehead and started bleeding,” said a TMC leader.

She was rushed to SSKM Hospital by Abhishek where she was admitted to Woodburn Ward and got four stitches on her head, the leader added.

Sources said that the CM had to undergo a few medical tests including an MRI and a Ct-scan.

SSKM Hospitak director Dr Manimoy Bandopadhy­ay said, "Chief Minister of West Bengal reported to our hospital today around 07.30 pm with a history of fall within the vicinity of her home due to some push from behind. She had a cerebral concussion and had a sharp cut over her forehead and nose which was bleeding profusely... Three stitches were applied on the forehead and one on the nose and the required dressing was done. Investigat­ions like ECG, CT scan, etc were done. Medical personnel have provided their opinion in these regards. She was advised to remain admitted for observatio­n, but she preferred to go home. She will again be assessed tomorrow and subsequent treatment will be decided accordingl­y..."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar wished for her quick recovery. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, Congress state unit chief leader Adhir Chowdhury, BJP state president Sukanta Majumder and many other political leaders wished her a speedy recovery.
