Anger management tip

-

nger is a natural, healthy emotion; and is an auto instinctive response to threats.

Some anger is necessary for our survival. Anger becomes a problem when you have trouble managing it, causing you to say or do things you regret.

You could have some emotions you need to sort through, or there could be a medical reason. A number of conditions and some medical treatments have rage as a side effect. A 2010 study found that uncontrolled anger is bad for your physical and mental health. It can also quickly escalate to verbal or physical violence, harming you and those around you. For some people, anger results from an underlying disorder, such as alcoholism or depression. Anger itself isn’t considered a disorder, but anger is a known symptom of several mental health conditions.

Anger causes physical and emotional symptoms. While it’s normal to experience these symptoms on occasion, a person with anger issues tends to experience them more often and to a more severe degree.

Natural solutions

Get some exercise: Physical activity can help reduce stress that can cause you to become angry. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run. Or spend time doing other enjoyable physical activities.

Take a timeout: Timeouts aren’t just for kids.

Give yourself short breaks during times of the day that tend to be stressful. A few moments of quiet time might help you feel better prepared to handle what’s ahead without getting angry.

Identify possible solutions: Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Also, understand that some things are simply out of your control. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything and might only make it worse.

Use humour: Lightening up can help diffuse tension. Use humour to help you face what’s making you angry and, possibly, any unrealistic expectations you have for how things should go.

Know when to seek help: Learning to control anger can be a challenge at times. Seek help for anger issues if your anger seems out of control, causes you to do things you regret or hurts those around you.
