India crossed the 2-crore mark of testing for Covid-19 on Monday with the tests totalling 2,02,02,858 since March, though the tests in a single day were much lower at 3,81,027 after peaking at 6,42,588 last Friday.

The mortality and recovery rates were also low after peaking at 853 and 51,255 respective­ly on Sunday. As on Monday morning, there were 771 deaths in 24 hours, raising the all-India death toll to 38,135 while the recoveries were 40,574, increasing the total recoveries out of 18 lakh tested positive were 11,86,203 which is 65.77% of those tested positive, same as on Sunday. However, updated from states pushed the national caseload 18,54,585 at night.

Those tested positive in the past 24 hours were 52,972, after peaking at 57,118 on Saturday. There are still 5.79 lakh under treatment in hospitals, which is 32.12% of the total infected. 11,627 were cured and discharged from the hospitals in 24 hours. The highest 18,795 were discharged last Thursday.

Ban on protests in Kerala extended till Aug 31

The Kerala HC on Monday extended its ban, till August 31, on protests of any kind in the state. The court said they cannot intervene in the Covid protocols.

Can’t predict about a second wave: ICMR DG

ICMR chief Dr Balram Bhargava said has said that it is difficult to predict whether or not India will see a second wave of Covid-19 infections and there will be smaller peaks at different times due to varied geography of the country. Prof Dr Bhargava added the situation was rapidly evolving and there have been immense variations in spread of infection and mortality rates in different geographie­s and across different demographi­cs around the world.
