MUMBAI: A delegation of 11 members from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice visited Arthur Road Jail on Thursday. The committee, led by chairman Bhupendra Yadav, interacted with prisoners at the jail’s legal aid clinic and reviewed efficacy of the judiciary. Speaking to The Free Press Journal, Rajvardhan Sinha, Inspector General of Police, Prisons, said, “The delegation has been touring all jails across the country. It is constituted by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice. It had visited the prison to inspect the efficacy of the judicial process and how to speed up the trials. The visit to the Arthur Road Jail was to inspect the legal aid clinic located in the jail. The legal aid clinics are functional under the Legal Aid Committee, which comprises advocates and judges from the high court. The team members asked the prisoners if they need lawyers to represent them.” “After the meeting, the delegation also visited Byculla Jail and interacted with the female prisoners and their children,” added Sinha. Sinha however denied the visit was related to the inspection of Barrack Number 12 at the Arthur Road Jail, where Vijay Mallya will be kept after extradition. “The committee had been touring across India. They came from Chennai and will be heading to Kolkata. The visit was not about inspection of Barrack Number 12,” he said.
