Orphanage director’s son charged with rape

- STAFF REPORTER

The son of an orphanage director was regularly raping an underage tribal orphan survivor for the last three years in Peth adivasi tehsil of Nashik district.

A case has been registered and the accused Atul Albad and his mother Sushila, who is the director of Nashik Zilla Adivasi Mahila Hakk Samiti (NZAMHS) were remanded in police custody till July 24 on Wednesday, according to senior PI Ravikant Sonawane.

Cases under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act have been registered at Peth police station.

Sources said that the accused was regularly raping the girl for the last three years. She was 15-years-old at that time and had even complained to the accused’s mother. The mother Sushila Albad who is director of the NZAMHS had threatened the survivor that she would be thrown out of the orphanage.

The survivor was then sent to Government Remand Home in Nashik City as she turned 18 on Tuesday. Here she told the superintendent, who immediately took her to Mumbai Naka police station and later got her examined medically. The accused was arrested on Tuesday night and produced in court on Wednesday

Human rights lawyer Ranjana Pagar-Gawande said that non government persons should be appointed to orphanages and ashram shalas. “It is a shame that the director neglected her duties as an administrator and as a mother,” she said.
