FYJC admissions second merit list: Seats fill up fast

Students are worried as they eagerly await the second merit list for FYJC (First Year Junior College) admissions, since most of the seats in top colleges are nearly full. The list was set to be declared at 5 pm on Wednesday. The students are worried because they are sceptical of the cut-off percentage not dipping and their admissions directly depend on the availability of seats in the most preferred colleges.

Around 70 to 80 per cent of the seats in top colleges are full after the admissions of the first merit list were completed. The reason that the seats are full is because this time the students had to secure their admissions if they were allotted a seat in the first college of their preference list. Therefore, those students who listed top colleges as their first preference had to secure admissions in those colleges or else they were thrown out of the admission system.

College authorities stated that they have some vacant seats which is why they will have a second merit list. Suhas Pednekar, Principal of Ramnarain Ruia College, said, “Students always set the best colleges higher in the list. But if there is a huge difference in their marks and the cut off percentage of the first merit list then the students should opt for other colleges. The reason why top colleges are full is because students have to take admissions in that college if it is their first choice.”

Students hope that the second merit list will face a drop in the cut-off but are sceptical about the top colleges. Rashmi Joshi, a student, said, “We hope the cut-off-dips for the second merit list because after this list the seats in almost all the top colleges will be full. These colleges might not even have a third list which will then leave us with no option but to admit ourselves in other colleges.”

The possibility that the cut-off percentage will dip in the second merit list depends on the availability of seats. Tushar Desai, Principal of Ruparel College, said, “The cut- off mainly depends on the availability of seats. We often have students who shift streams after securing admissions so a vacancy of seats is created.”

The students were not aware about the option of betterment this year. If students are not allotted a seat in their preferred college other than the first choice then they can wait for the next merit list.

Desai added, “The students can simply not take admissions if they have been allotted a seat in the college which is not their first choice.”
