It was not a break-in in the literal sense, for a gang of unidentified burglars who quietly entered into jewellery shop in Mira Road on Friday night by opening around nine locks, apparently using duplicate keys.

Once into the shop, the miscreants managed to bore a hole in the safety vault, making away with gold ornaments amounting Rs 55 lakh.

According to the police, the burglary was reported from Meera Jewellers in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road. The incident came to light when the owner of Meera Jewellers -Mukesh Badolaas usual came to open the shop at about 9.30 am on Saturday.

The miscreants also took away the digital video recorder of the Close Circuit Television Camera ( CCTV) installed inside so that the police could not get clues about them. “The crime is suspected to have been committed with the help of an insider who not only provided the miscreants with minute details about the shop, but also helped them with duplicate keys.” said, Senior Police Inspector, Dhanaji Kshirsagar.

Investigations revealed that one of the employees ( name withheld) of the shop, had left for his native village in Rajasthan last week and his cellphone is switched off ever since. A dog squad and the finger prints were summoned at the shop to trace for clues.

A case of burglary under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC has been registered.

Police Sub-Inspector, Sharad Zine, is investigating the case.
