New Delhi: Requesting for supply of the anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the battle against coronavirus, Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro — in a letter to PM Narendra Modi — has compared HCQ to the Sanjeevani herb in Ramayana that Lord Hanuman brought to save Lakshmana’s life. Australia has also sought certain drugs from India but not HCQ, sources said.

Requesting for supply of the anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the battle against the Coronavirus pandemic, Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro — in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi — has compared HCQ to the Sanjeevani herb in the holy Hindu epic Ramayana that Lord Hanuman brought to save

Lakshmana’s life.

Brazil seems to have become the second country after the United States to ask for HCQ from India at the top Presidential level. US President Donald Trump had recently made the request to India following which New Delhi had said it would supply the drug to countries badly hit by the pandemic. Meanwhile, Australia has also sought certain drugs from India but not HCQ, sources said.

In his letter to PM Modi,

Brazilian President Bolsonaro stated, “Just as Lord Hanuman brought the holy medicine from the Himalayas to save the life of Lord Rama's brother Lakshmana, and (just as) Jesus (Christ) healed those who were sick and restored the sight to Bartimeu, India and Brazil will overcome this global crisis by joining forces and sharing blessings for the sake of all peoples,” The two leaders had recently spoken on phone as well.

“Brazil has asked for supply of HCQ from India. The Brazilian President asked for it during the recent phone call with PM Modi and also sent a letter for follow-up,” Brazilian diplomatic sources confirmed on Wednesday.

In other developments, India on Wednesday said it is “responding positively” to a request from Australia for supply of certain drugs to combat the Covid-19 pandemic but well-placed diplomatic sources told this newspaper that Australia has not asked for anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine.
