New Delhi: Infuriated by a heated argument with her husband, a 34-year old woman in East Delhi pushed her two minor children to death from the balcony of the third floor on Monday night and later tried to commit suicide by jumping from the same floor.

The deceased children have been identified as seven-year-old Mehak and three-year-old Aafraan, while their mother who is said to be critical and still undergoing treatment ,is identified as Aliya, said a police official.

After Aliya pushed her two children from the balcony, Aafraan landed on the ground, while his sister and mother fell on the first floor balcony, a senior

police officer from Laxmi Nagar police station said.

The incident occurred at about 9 pm on Monday in Lalita Park area of Laxmi Nagar. Locals alleged that they heard a loud thump after which they rushed out of their home and immediatel­y informed the police.

“Locals informed the police regarding the incident on Monday night following which a team rushed to the spot. All were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where the two children were declared brought dead while Aliya is still undergoing treatment,” said the official.

“During initial investigat­ion, it was revealed that Aliya took the extreme step after her husband, Munawar Ali, left the house following their argument.

“After the argument she took her children to balcony of their house on third floor and pushed them from there, the official said.”

The husband has a an auto parts shop in Sadar Bazaar. The couple often used to indulge in quarrel, an official said.

“A case has been registered under relevant sections at Laxmi Nagar police station. A sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) level inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

“Police teams are questionin­g Munawar Ali,” the senior police official added.
