Veteran actor Kamal Haasan meets Mohammed Muthu Meera Lebbai Maraicker, elder brother of former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, at Kalam’s residence in Rameswaram on Wednesday. After his successful fivedecade film career, the 63- year- old actor on Wednesday launched his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam ( people justice centre), in the presence of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and others.

Actor Kamal Hassan officially became a neta after he launched his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam ( People Justice Centre), and its flag in front of thousands of his delirious fans here on Wednesday. It was appropriate that he took his baby steps in politics in the cradle of classical Tamil, Madurai. Delhi chief minister, Arvinf Kejriwal, was present on the occasion.

The actor sought to unite all six South Indian states through his six interlocked hands, in red and white on the flag with a white background. Six stars at the centre symbolise people, he explained.

Kamal said he would maintain equidistance from the Left and the Right. “I would always be with people. That’s why Maiam ( centre) figures on our flag,” he said. The three- time national award winner never attacked anyone by name.

He touched upon various subjects including Cauvery dispute, unemployment, education and corruption.

“Please join me to root out corruption. I can’t do it alone,” he said, adding that his party had already been registered with the Election Commission.

Kamal said there would be no permanent CM in his party, in a dig at AIADMK.

“We would create leaders for the next generations. People make fun of my age. My remaining life is for you,” he added. The actor said he would not forget the hurdles the current regime has been

posing to his party.

When asked whether his children would enter politics, he said they are already in politics, pointing to the thousands

of fans.

The actor, noted for donning multiple roles on celluloid may have taken up the most challenging task in real life.

It is also time to add politician to actor, film buff, director, producer, dancer and writer on his Twitter profile.

AS AN ACTOR, I HAVE LIVED IN THE HEARTS OF MY FANS BUT NOW I WANT TO LIVE IN THE PEOPLE'S HOMES ( IN THE NEW POLITICAL AVATAR). GREATNESS CAN COME FROM SIMPLE BEGINNINGS. ACTUALLY IT WILL COME ONLY FROM SIMPLICITY. GLAD TO START MY JOURNEY FROM A GREAT MAN'S SIMPLE ABODE. EVEN YOU ( JOURNALISTS) SHOULD COME TO POLITICS. ONCE ADVOCATES USED TO COME TO POLITICS IN LARGE NUMBERS... NOBODY QUESTIONED... WHEN ACTORS COME, PEOPLE QUESTION.
