Stealing a car from an Ola cab driver cost a thief his life after he rammed it into a stationed truck in a bid to flee the spot.

According to police, the incident took place in Dhulsiras area on Saturday midnight. The police said that the victim, identified as Chandrapal, the driver of the Ola cab bearing Haryana registration, was on his way to Delhi from Gurgaon. At about 12.20 am, when he reached Dwarka’s Sector 19 signal light, two men flagged Chandrapal asking him for a lift to Gurgaon.

In his statement to the police, Chandrapal stated that he allegedly told the two thieves that it was late and he was heading home to Durgapur. According to him, when he told the robbers that he couldn’t offer them lift to Gurgaon, the duo allegedly pulled out knives and threatened him of dire consequences. The robbers then robbed him of his Maruti Swift car and fled the spot.

However, the duo ran out of luck when the thief behind the wheels rammed the car into a stationary truck after driving it up to 4 km. While the thief driving the car died on the spot, the other managed to flee the scene, abandoning the stolen car, said the police.

The deceased accused, who was moved to DDU Hospital, was identified as Ashok Dinda, a resident of Haryana. A car bearing a sticker of information and broadcast ministry allegedly went missing on Saturday night.

According to the police, the incident took place in east Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar at around 9 pm. The car was being driven by Naveen Chauhan, a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase 3. He works at the information and broadcast ministry.

In his statement, Mr Chauhan stated that at about 8.30 pm he was returning home after finishing his work at office. On his way, Mr Chauhan stopped at New Kondli Vishwa Bharti Public School and went to buy provisions for the house. After about 20 minutes when he returned, the car was missing from the place he had parked earlier. After a frantic search when Mr Chauhan didn’t find his car, he reported the matter to the police.

The police has ordered an enquiry into the same and a search has begun for the car. As the car bears a sticker of the I&B ministry, the police said that it raises security concerns.

It can be recalled that on October 18, a car belonging to the director of revenue intelligence was allegedly stolen from South Delhi’s Seva Nagar.
