DCW chief at MHA to flag concern on women
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal met Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday and complained that there was an absence of synergy between the Central and Delhi governments and the police. She said a coordinated response towards the issue of women’s safety is lacking.
“I had sought an appointment with the home minister because rapes are increasing in the national capital regularly. The way minor girls are being harassed is very wrong. I have raised a few issues with the minister and he has given me a positive response,” Ms Maliwal told reporters after the meeting.
“Firstly, I believe there is no synergy or coordination between the Centre, state and the Delhi police and therefore there is lack of a coordinated response in dealing with issue of women’s safety. I suggested that a forum should be set up in which L- G, Union home minister, Delhi chief minister and the DCW should at least meet twice a month. They should review whatever steps and measures are being taken,” she added.
During the 20- minute meeting, the DCW chief also raised the issue of fixing accountability of the police.
“We have got certain statistics. For instance, only 13 out of 4,000 complaints received by the police through Himmat application were acted upon. Similarly, chargesheets are filed only in one- third cases and rest remain pending. Hence, there needs to be a mechanism to fix the accountability of the police,” she said.
