In a first of its kind initiative, Metro station witnessing high footfall will be developed as “multimodal integrated centres” to decongest and regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the national capital. The design has been prepared for connecting these metro stations through multi- modal facilities such as travelator, skywalks, elevators, foot- over- bridges and underpasses to regulate pedestrian traffic.

The plan will be implemented through a concerted effort of the agencies, including the Delhi development authority, public works department, Delhi Metro and Delhi traffic police.

The Metro stations, including Rajouri garden, Netaji Subhash Place, Welcome, Janakpuri, Lajpat Nagar, Mayur Vihar and upcoming stations at Ashram, ITO and RK Puram will soon be developed as multi- modal hubs to decongest and regulate both pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the areas around the metro stations.

“The areas around operational and upcoming metro stations witnessing high footfall will be developed to provide integration with key points around them such as malls, multiplexes and others, so that the pedestrians do not have to struggle their ways through road traffic,” an official with the traffic police said.

Lieutenant- gover nor Najeeb Jung had recently reviewed the proposal to convert these Metro stations into interchange hubs. The proposal takes a cue from the countries such as Singapore, where the pedestrian traffic is separated from the vehicular traffic via various means such as skywalks and travelators.
