Police beef up security around DU campus for smooth polls
NEW DELHI: Every police station in North Delhi will be on an alert in view of the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections which is scheduled to be held on Wednesday. According to police, they are geared up for the voting day as well. Focus will remain on eve teasing and free and fair election.
Readiness for counting and procession of the parties thereafter is maintained. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Nupur Prasad stated that they have made a proper arrangement so that the voters can cast their votes without any fear.
The law enforcement agency claimed that there is a comprehensive security plan for the smooth conduct of DU elections covering all the three phases, that is, campaigning, voting and counting. All the entry points of the Universities are manned and picketed. Vehicles are regularly checked so that undesirable thing is not brought to the campus.
“Regular bus checking at the bus stops are also enhanced. Motorcycle patrolling for both day and night time is increased near colleges, hostels and staff quarters,” said the police officer.
Police further claimed that strict vigil is kept for defacement and legal action is immediately taken wherever violations are found.
So far, six cases have been registered in this regard. The police had taken strict action and they had not allowed any defacement of the private property apart from the wall of democracy. A team from every police station will be on round and there is also a vigilance department team keeping an eye on the election.
Because of our active pres- ence, nominations and withdrawal of names as against last year went on smoothly,” police said. Earlier North district police had instructed student unions to stay away from any kind of violence and also from defacement otherwise they will be booked as per law.
According to police, the student unions were told that there should be strict compliance of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations to ensure free and fair elections. Legal action will be initiated in case of defacement of public properties.
