Govt to rope in private coaching agencies to provide free training to gifted students

- SAYANTAN GHOSH

NEW DELHI: In a bid to promote sports in Delhi and give an opportunity to the hidden sporting talent in government schools, Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday introduced a new policy, under which private coaching agencies will provide free training to the talented students. ''Earlier, we had run this scheme as a pilot project for a one-and-a-half year in around 50 schools, out of which 18 academies performed really well in 27 schools as far as many sports activities were concerned bringing out good talent,”' Sisodia said.

Under the new sports policy, the government schools in various colonies will let the private coaching agencies and coaches make use of the premises for operating academies, on the condition that 50 per cent of the total seats in these academies or the coaching classes will be kept for government school students, who will be trained for free by the private coaches. “Private coaching agencies can use the grounds and spaces at government schools, as there has been a shortage of playing areas,” he added.

''Continuing on these lines, we have introduced the policy and sought proposals from experienced coaches and sports academies for all Delhi government schools, for which the last date is January 29,'' he said. The minister said that if the coaches want to bring the private students also then that would be their own decision and they might charge those students. But the Delhi government school students would not be charged at any point, he clarified.

"If some students want to take training in some other schools' premise they would be allowed," he said. The education minister clarified that the target is to give training to the Delhi government school students and in the private sponsors will get free space which is generally very costly. “The government is also in touch with many sports stars who might get involved in this project and help the government schools students. I have talked to some of them and will continue the discussion because this will encourage our students,” he added.
