Eyewitness­es who caught hold of the accused driver said that they saw alcohol glasses inside the car, indicating that he was drunk

NEW DELHI: In a fatal accident that happened on Monday night, a speeding car mowed down two people sleeping on the footpath in Chattarpur in South Delhi. In the accident, one of the person died and the other has been seriously injured.

The accident occurred at around 11.15 pm on Monday when a speeding Maruti Suzuki lost control and crashed into the pavement and ran over two labourers who were sleeping. Eyewitness­es alleged that the car was overspeedi­ng and hence lost balance before it ran over the men sleeping on the pavement. The impact of the accident was so much that the front portion of the car got badly damaged. Soon, crowd gathered at the site and the driver was caught by the public.

The injured were rushed to the hospital but the victim died of excessive bleeding. The deceased has been identified as Kanhaiya. His body was later sent for post-mortem. The second person has been badly injured and is undergoing treatment. The deceased and the injured were labourers who slept on the roadside pavement.

After the accident, the car hit a pole and could not move. The locals then caught hold of the driver and police were informed. The police have arrested the accused driver who is said to be working as an accountant in an iron shop in Chattarpur. He was returning to his home in Ghitorni when his speeding car hit the victims. The accused has been identified as Pankaj. The people, who caught the driver, alleged that they saw wine glasses inside the car. The cops have registered a case and have got the accused medically examined.

“We have booked the driver for drunk and driving and under relevant sections in the case,” said Additional DCP (South) Chinmoy Biswal. Pankaj was later arrested.
